Compare the real products, not just the names
Two roof bids may use different shingle names. Check the real products first. Three-tab and architectural are just names for shapes. They do not show you the full job. They do not show the exact rating or the final cost. Ask each roofer to name the product line, the color, and the roof parts in the bid.
Keep the roof size the same in both bids. Keep the tear-off plan the same too. Then you can see what the extra cost buys. It may buy a better shingle, more flashing work, or a better warranty. The card below helps you sort these facts. It will not pick a winner for every home.
See how the two shingle shapes differ
Three-tab shingles have a flat, repeat pattern with three equal tabs. Architectural shingles stack layers. This makes them look thicker and more varied. Owens Corning calls these shingles dimensional or laminated. The shape is a good start. But shape alone does not show full performance.
Hold full-size samples side by side. Check the edges and shadow lines. Do not look at color alone. A mixed-color sample can look different from a small flat swatch. If you are only fixing one section, ask how the new shingle will match the old roof next to it.
Keep construction, rating, price and coverage separate

Read each rating with its own test facts
Copy the exact wind and impact numbers from each product sheet. Keep the test name next to its rating. A test result is not the same as a warranty limit. Also check the nail pattern that is required. Check the slope limits too. Check if extra parts are needed for this roof.
A claim made for one shingle line may not fit every shingle. If someone says a shingle is stronger or premium, ask them to prove it. Ask which fact on the sheet backs up that claim. If a rating is missing, write it down as a question. Do not guess the number from a similar product.

Make sure both bids cover the same roof work
The shingle is only one line on the price sheet. Compare tear-off, deck repair, starter strip, underlayment, leak barrier, flashing, vents, ridge caps, trash removal, and cleanup. GAF's roof parts guide shows how much goes into a roof. A roof is more than its visible shingles. Use it as a checklist, then follow each roofer's actual plan.
One bid may replace chimney flashing. The other may not. Then the price gap is not a pure shingle upgrade. Ask for a new bid that matches both scopes. List any extra work on its own line. A clear comparison lets you explain every price gap in plain words.

Keep warranty length separate from true roof life
A warranty is a list of terms about certain problems. It is not a clock that tells you when your roof will fail. Read what is covered, who pays for labor, what changes over time, and what papers you must keep. Ask for the written product warranty. Ask for the separate labor terms too.
One bid may offer extra coverage. Ask the roofer to name it. Ask what makes the job qualify. Find out who must register it. Do not pay extra for a name that never shows up in the final papers. Check the fine print as closely as the main promise.

Compare the actual prices you were given
Put the two quoted totals into the card. Do this only after you check that the scopes match. The tool shows the dollar gap. It also shows the percent gap against the first price, when that price is above zero. These numbers only describe your own quotes. They are not a general price for Peoria.
A higher price might buy something worth having. Math alone cannot decide that for you. Write one sentence about the main benefit of each choice. If you cannot explain the gap, ask for a clearer bid. Do not divide the extra cost by a promised lifespan. That would invent a yearly cost that is not real.
Check supply and future repair questions
A shingle can be listed online but not ready to order for your home. Check the exact line and color with your installer first. Owens Corning notes that some shingle lines are sold only in certain areas. Do not assume a shingle in a guide is sold near you.
Ask how future repairs would work. Ask which product details you should save. A new shingle may not match a roof that has aged in the sun. If matching matters on nearby roof slopes, raise this before work starts. Write down any accepted color or pattern difference.
Send a clear request that gets a useful answer
Your request to a roofer can be short. Name the two products. List the scope gaps. Say which benefit matters most to you. That could be a flatter look, more depth, a proven impact rating, or a certain warranty. Add your own notes only if you want to.
Plan a full new roof? Use this page to pick the shingle as part of that plan. Have only a few loose or torn shingles? Start with a repair check instead. A pricier shingle will not fix an old deck. It will not fix bad flashing. It will not fix nearby roof areas that need work.
Your questions, answered
Are architectural shingles always the better choice?
They may fit the look or features you want. But the exact product still matters most. Compare named products on a matched scope of work. Do not pick a shingle from a broad claim about its whole category.
Is three-tab always cheaper?
Check the real written offers first. Product supply, roof details, extra parts, and included work can change the total. A general rule of thumb is not a quote for your Peoria home.
Can I compare a wind rating to a warranty wind limit?
Keep these two facts apart. A test rating shows how a product did in a test. A warranty shows what the maker promises to cover, and under what rules. Ask the roofer to explain both for your exact bid.
Will the comparison card choose my shingle for me?
No. It only shows the facts you enter. It shows missing details and the price gap too. You decide what matters most, once you confirm each product fits your roof. An unknown fact stays unknown. It does not get a made-up score.
